Joseph Tomkins, director

Celebrating his tenth year at McKinney Boyd High School, Mr. Tomkins conducts A CappellaMeistersingersFusion, a vocal jazz and pop ensemble, and serves as Fine Arts Department Chair for McKinney Boyd High School as well as Secondary Vocal Lead for MISD. Prior to his appointment at Boyd, Mr. Tomkins taught across town at McKinney High School as well as Kleb Intermediate School in the Houston area. In 2018 Mr. Tomkins was honored to be selected as McKinney Boyd's Teacher of the Year and went on to be selected as McKinney ISD's Secondary Teacher of the Year. In August of 2018, Mr. Tomkins was chosen by Region 10 as one of the three finalists from over 80 school distrcits for 2019 Secondary Teacher of the Year. Originally from the United Kingdom, Mr. Tomkins is a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education and was later named their Young Music Educator of the Year in 2012. While at SMU, Mr. Tomkins sang under the baton of Dr. Alfred Calabrese and studied voice with renowned mezzo-soprano Virginia Dupuy. Mr. Tomkins has also completed coursework in music education at Dallas Baptist University where he studied choral conducting with Dr. Stephen Holcomb. 

While teaching is his first love, Mr. Tomkins also enjoys performing as a guest soloist throughout the DFW area and has performed as a principle in various operas in addition to performing in a choral setting at such venues as St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, England and Carnegie Hall in New York City. Mr. Tomkins and his partner, Justin, reside in McKinney with their dog, Maverick

Amy Harrington, associate director

Currently in her fourth year at McKinney Boyd High School, Mrs. Harrington is a product of the tradition of excellence within Texas Choral Music. Growing up in Richardson, Mrs. Harrington was a member of the stellar J.J. Pearce High School choir program and was a former all-state choir member. At Baylor University, Mrs. Harrington sang under the direction of Dr. Alan Raines, Dr. Lynne Gackle and studied voice with Dr. Jerry Gordon and Dr. Deborah Williamson. Mrs. Harrington graduated Magna Cum Laude from with a degree in Music Education. In addition to being the director of Lyric and Camerata, Mrs. Harrington also teaches Advanced Placement Music Theory. Prior to joining the faculty at McKinney Boyd High School, Mrs. Harrington served as assistant choir director at Brandenburg Middle School in the Garland Independent School District.

Mrs. Harrington and her husband, Zane, live in The Colony and neither are strangers to the stage. Mrs. Harrington has performed in a choral setting in both the United States and abroad in such venues as The Vatican, in Italy and Carnegie Hall in New York City.
